Gender:

Picture
When considering gender, Family Guy seems to correlate with male dominance like other cartoons such as King of the Hill and the Simpsons. Most of the main characters such as Peter, Stewie, and Brian are all males. When it comes to making jokes, no woman is part of it and if anything, they are the ones being made fun of. An instance when women are looked down upon is when their is a plane crash and a man that survives says he is so happy he is alive but so mad at his wife, so he goes home and starts beating his wife who was guilty of nothing. But Family Guy makes fun of everything, what I noticed is that it exaggerates the way women are looked upon in society even today. In Family Guy women are seen as inferior to men, but the few women in the show like Lois are smarter than these men and are the ones that stay out of the idiotic acts of Peter and his guy friends.

What Family Guy is trying to show is that even though over time women have elevated themselves to the level of men (if not exceeded), in terms of gender dominance, they are still seen as the second-class gender compared to men. Here is where the "Beauty and the Beast" theory can be applied. Even though men in the show like Peter are given more screen time, his idiotic behavior compared to Lois's who appears much less, is displayed to show the contrasts of men compared to women. Women are portrayed as inferior but at the same time shown to have empowerment with their knowledge and appropriate actions. In the article by Tomaselli, he supports the theory by bringing up examples from other shows like "The Simpsons" and "The Cosby Show". He implies that some sitcoms have taken a different approach from the traditional values of a sitcom, and provided a more radical aspect. This theory in Family Guy that implicitly shows women impowerment by being put down at the same time follows the norm but at the same time provides a more radical view. So in the end, men are being put down to show the progression of women through time.
